Die Verwendung von Holz in langlebigen Produkten, wie z.B. dem Holzbau, gilt allgemein als ein wichtiger Beitrag zum Klimaschutz. Auf diese wiederum haben die Transportwege des Holzes von der Waldstraße an bis zum Verwendungsort, also z.B. der Baustelle, einen maßgeblichen Einfluss. Während sich die mit der jeweiligen Fertigung der Holzprodukte verbundenen Emissionen zwischen den Unternehmen im Alpenraum oft eher wenig unterscheiden, können die mit den Transportprozessen verbundenen Emissionen erheblich schwanken, je nachdem, ob das Holz regional verarbeitet worden ist oder über weite Strecken vielfach auch außereuropäisch importiert wurde.
